Once upon a time in Simmental
Could it be a summer or a winter tale? The facility would be to promote the snow-capped peaks including the Stockhorn culminating at 2,190 m, the more than 200 km. of ski slopes, or the nine km. toboggan runs, accessible via 72 ski lifts. May the addicts of skiing forgive us, this time we will give precedence to the other beautiful season, summer.
Let's give back to Caesar..
We may be in what appears to be one of the biggest ski resorts in the Swiss Alps. The history of the Simmental, and more particularly of Lenk, really began in summer with the influx of thermal tourists to the Weissenburg spring. This water, whose benefits had been recognized since 1604, began to attract many curists at the beginning of the XXth century, and it was only then that the tracks filled with downhill slopes as a sensation thanks, among other things, to when the railway arrived in 1902.
The popularity of the place increased tenfold in 1938 when Wilhelmine, queen of the Netherlands came there for a cure and celebrated the engagement of Princess Juliana with Prince Bernhard. The whole European elite then discovered Lenk and the Simmental. While the Côte d'Azur was their favorite in summer, the British made a major contribution to the development of winter Lenk.
At the beginning was the water...
The cure is indeed at the origin of the fame of Lenk. To fully appreciate the experience, head to Wallbach Bad in Lenk. There, in addition to the usual outdoor saunas and jacuzzi (at 34 ° C, however), by slipping into the heated outdoor swimming pool, you can admire the Alps whatever the season. Calm, relaxation and eye candy in perspective
After the water, the tops
Hikers can make the big gap between Erlenbach at 635 m. high and the Wildstrubel massif pointing at a modest 3,244 meters, via a network of some 600 km of track. Classified into 14 themes, the hikes offer walkers different facets of the Simmental.
These slopes are also the scene of many sporting and recreational activities: 17 mountain bike tracks accommodate two wheels. Golfers, for their part, can hit the ball at the nearby Saanenmöser golf course, a superb plateau 1,400 meters above sea level. Simme takes its source, or at the foot of the Iffig waterfalls offering a waterfall of 100 m. They can also follow the trails of medicinal plants or herbs used in the preparation of syrups or liqueurs.
From the top of the Stockhorn, you can also enjoy a 240 ° panoramic view covering everything from Lake Thun to the Jura.
For new sensations, you can also calmly descend the tracks on a trottibike, a hybrid between a scooter and a bicycle, or faster on the handlebars of a mountain Kart. And for the thrill of it, you can bungee jump off the Stockhorn railway or fly a paraglider.
And the gastronomy?
Most of the Swiss mountain specialties, including the essential fondue, remain available, but some are to be discovered: Watch the making of PDO Berner Alpkäse and Hobelkäse PDO cheeses, which you will taste with respect for Alpkultur accompanied by finely dried meat sliced and bread with fine alpine herbs. Other local flavors, such as spicy cheese, crunchy sausages or juicy beef, are to be enjoyed in the many restaurants with woody decor or during the Alpine weekend, the highlight of which is the election of Miss Lenk. It should be noted that this is a cow, which won this title after a flowery procession on a beautiful October day with a typical market and a musical and culinary evening.
